Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.

"I'm going to Hagrid's, I've got a good feeling about going to Hagrid's."
for cake??? hehe!

I made this cake for my massage therapists daughters birthday. We were talking one day while I was being massaged and I mentioned my cakes. Dan asked if I could make different kinds of cakes. I said of course I can, and gave him my blog link so that he could check them out for himself. He has now commissioned me for 2 cakes.

This Harry Potter one is the first.

I tried a couple new things with this cake. And needed all the help that I could get. Thank goodness Ian had that interview with my company for the Twilight cake, cause I needed him for this one.

We baked the chocolate cakes and cut them into book shapes. Layered them with chocolate truffle filling and then came the hard part. Adding the buttercream icing to the cake so that we could apply the fondant for the pages and cover. I almost threw it off the balcony more than once while making it. The air was blue with curse words and finally, I gave up, but the cake in the fridge, opened a beer and started to watch Lost.

About halfway thru Lost, I decided to try again. Took the cake out of the fridge to see if I could salvage it or if it would indeed be taking a leap off the balcony. I was able to save the cake and applied the fondant that Ian and I had rolled out (more than once. measure twice, cut once, right Ian?) I added the white first and then the cover of the book. Used some spray colour to make the book look a little more worn. Then Ian sat and meticulously painted on the pages of the book.

I should mention that before the butter cream fiasco, we (mostly Ian) molded a rice krispie (or krispie rice, no name brand) cake owl onto a wooden spoon and we put that in the freezer to harden. Once the pages were painted and the book was to my liking, we started on the placing, covering and shaping of Hedwig. It worked out quite well and over all I am very pleased with this cake.
I'm just crossing my fingers now that the weight of the owl doesn't ruin the cake between now and Friday (pick up day).
